Two Years Strong: Celebrating KGS and the Community We’ve Built

We’ve recently welcomed quite a few new members — so if you're one of them, welcome! I wanted to take a moment to offer a brief introduction to who we are and what you can expect from this community.

Typically, I describe KGS as an inclusive, platonic social group that hosts events at least twice a month. Our goal is to create opportunities for members to explore Knoxville, support LGBTQIA+-owned businesses, and build meaningful connections. Events are selected by our leadership team and often highlight local gems or reflect member suggestions — whether it's hiking, brunch, or something else entirely. However, that short description doesn’t fully capture what makes KGS.

KGS officially turned two in May of this year, and it's amazing to reflect on how much we've grown and what this group has meant to so many. KGS started as an idea between two friends who simply wanted to make more friends in Knoxville. At the time, most options for meeting others in the gay community revolved around bars or dating apps. That environment often felt cliquish or overtly sexual. We wanted something different, emotionally safe, and platonic.

An idea became an event. Awkward introductions riddled with social anxiety became authentic conversations. As we made friends, we made memories. As we shared experiences, we shared a vision. The members became passionate about what they were experiencing and owned it; it was then KGS found its voice. Members spoke to the issue of the name, saying it had to change. “Knoxville Gay Men’s Social” was too exclusive. The need to connect and belong isn’t limited to gay men - it's a shared human experience. The name over the door had to reflect the values within. This is truly when Knoxville Gay Social was born, and our mission of inclusivity and connection encompasses not just gay men but the entire spectrum of LGBTQI+, BIPOC, and our allies. KGS is a place for everyone, and everyone belongs.

And yes - we are still unapologetically gay. You were warned. 😄

After our first year, we took the next big step: becoming a nonprofit organization. This allowed us to reduce financial barriers, offer tax deductions for donors, legitimize our mission, and, of course, access group discounts (plus tax benefits). To do that, we formed a board. Members stepped up and volunteered their time, skills, and passion to keep KGS growing. These individuals make up our Leadership Team (check them out on our website). None of them wanted a title — we all serve KGS members as members, with dedication and humility. They work hard, but they’re not the whole story.

It’s our members who keep the spirit alive: coming up with innovative ideas like Karma Pay, suggesting fun and meaningful events, and helping us grow in diversity and sustainability. Some have become moderators for subgroups like volleyball and game nights. Others bring food and drinks, take photos to capture our shared joy, or offer words of encouragement that help someone feel seen and empowered. Many have shared KGS with friends — and those friends have become part of this vibrant community, too.

So that’s a little about who we are and what we do. You are KGS and the heart of all of this.  We’re thrilled to celebrate our 2nd anniversary — and reaching 100 members — with all of you.

Much love, and here’s to many more years together!
